Best Buy and other retailers have started dropping the price of the iPad 2. The price drop reinforces the rumor that the iPad 3 is on the way – and possibly as early as March 7. (Apple sent members of the press an invitation for March 7 event today.)
Best Buy dropped the price of the iPad 2 across the board – the 16-gigabyte, Wi-Fi-only iPad 2 is now $449.99 down from $499.99, while the most expensive model, the 64-gigabyte iPad 2 with Wi-Fi and 3G capability, is now $779.99 down from $829.99.
Apple insiders and retail analyst point to the fact that both Apple and authorized retailers will usually drop prices in addition to pumping more dollars in advertising to promote sales of products that are about to be phased out. (Retailers don’t want to be stuck holding older tech products, especially Apple ones.)
The Next Big Thing
The first two iPads were introduced by the late Steve Jobs. The first iPad was first announced on Jan. 27, 2010, it was released to stores April 3, 2010. The iPad 2 was unveiled on March 2, 2011. It was available for sale to the public on March 11, 2011. Apple has made no comment or announcement about the iPad 3 or hinted to an expected release date.
As far as what technology will the iPad 3 include, and the iPad 3 features, Apple hasn’t revealed any information. Still that hasn’t stopped industry insiders and analyst from speculating – they’re confident Apple will include a “retina display.” This will double the resolution of the device display. It’s also rumored the iPad 3 will work with 4G LTE networks, like those supported by AT&T and Verizon. While there is a 3G iPad, a 4G iPad has yet to be released.
Apps Make the iPad
App development for iPad is a big business and there’s no doubt the newest iPad features – no matter what they are – will push the device to new limits. It’s up to app developers to truly exploit the device. Are you looking forward to the iPad 3 or are you buying an iPad 2?
