App of the Month: Galaga 30th Collection (Review)

Game: Galaga 30th Collection
Developer: Namco
Rating: 3 out 5 stars
Price: $7.99 for the collection, $2.99 per game

1981. Prince Charles marries Lady Diana…the first Space Shuttle (Columbia) takes flight…and Cabbage Patch Kids dolls are all the rage in toy stores. On July 23 of that same year, Namco shakes up the game world by introducing Galaga in arcades. The game goes on to become one of most beloved shooters of all time.

To mark the game’s 30-year anniversary, Namco has released Galaga 30th Collection for iOS. The game collection brings together Galaxian, Galaga, Gaplus (aka Galaga 3) and of course, the first updated version of the classic shooter, Galaga ’88.

Playable on both the iPhone and iPad the Galaga 30th Collection features reworked graphics that lean more toward a modern remixed feel than their retro cousins – the games also feature (oddly) an optional scan-line filter and score-tracking HUD.

Four servings of Galaga await you in the 30th anniversary collection.

As far as gameplay goes, not much has changed in 30 years. Players still blast away at insect-like aliens that attack from the top of the screen, while trying to make it to the challenging bonus stages and collect extra ships. The game still delivers solid shooter thrills with two modes of controls that are similar to the arcade version. The “virtual joystick” mode moves your ship left and right across the screen at a speed similar to the arcade originals, while a “slider” mode moves your ship as fast as you can swipe your finger back and forth across the screen.

The History of a Classic
Galaga (pronounced as “gyaraga” in Japanese) was released in Japan by Namco and released to arcades in the U.S. by Midway. The game was part of the shooter craze that tried to capitalize on the success of Space Invaders, which was released in 1978.

Galaga was actually a sequel. It was based on Galaxian which was released in 1979. Galaxian took the invader concept and expanded on it, with insect-like aliens breaking off from the main formation and attacking the player independently. Galaga also spawned sequels of its own, like Gaplus (1984) and Galaga ’88 (released at the end of 1987).

The original flyer that was sent to arcade owners to convince them to buy the game. Note the cocktail table in the lower left corner; recently Galaga cocktail tables have sold on eBay for $4,000.

Since its release in 1981, the game has been remade countless times. In 1995, Namco’s PlayStation version of the arcade game Tekken featured a side game consisting entirely of challenging stages. The game developed such a following that it has been paid homage to frequently in pop culture: on the ABC TV series Lost (in which a submarine is named “Galaga”), the show’s writers were such fans of the game that they played it between writing sessions; and in the 1982 film WarGames, the game machine makes an appearance alongside star Matthew Broderick. The greeting-card company Hallmark even released a Christmas tree ornament shaped like a Galaga arcade machine – complete with sound clips from the game.

The original arcade game was available in two versions, a standing upright cabinet and a sit-down cocktail table. Original Galaga cocktail tables are highly collectible now and command prices of up to $4,000.

Making Your Own Video Game
Today, a simple shooter like Galaga can be developed easily. Learning to make video games isn’t as hard as you think, provided you receive the right training. Plus, in the casual games age we live in, simple addictive games like Galaga have regained popularity. Who knows? Thirty years from now, we could be celebrating your videogame creation.

Will the Future be Disc-less?

Like the dodo bird (pronounced dough-dough), discs are soon going to be extinct – at least if Apple has anything to do with it. A longtime technology innovator, Apple continues to move away from physical media, such as the discs used for DVDs and CDs. For instance, Apple recently announced that its Mac Mini and MacBook Air models would not include an optical/DVD drive. And we’re sure you’ve already heard of iTunes and the App Store…

The fabled dodo bird, whose modern-day relatives include pigeons and doves, became extinct before 1700.

With the introduction of “The Cloud,” tablets and digital downloads are becoming the way to get your media. And as digital downloads take over, optical drives and other physical media-delivery systems continue to lose their foothold in the technology marketplace. Netflix, Hulu and iTunes are each implementing streaming-video delivery of movies and TV shows.

Digital Downloads are the Future
Apple has declared war on discs and it doesn’t take a genius to see why.  For consumers, digital downloads represent a more convenient and less bulky solution.

Digital media can be easily moved between different devices, so no longer do consumers have to tote around a bookcase full of discs. Even software applications are now being delivered digitally. For example, take the latest version of Final Cut Pro X. It is only available from the Apple Store and then by download only. The same goes for the physical version of Apple’s Mac OS X Lion; it’s available only on a USB thumb drive, and not on disc. Rumors are already starting to circulate that Apple has already ceased supporting discs, and that next-generation Apple software will only be available via download through the App Store.

Apple has been pushing early adoption of better and simpler technology for years. In 1998, it introduced the first iMac, which came without a floppy drive. And just try to find a USB port on the iPad. In other words, get ready for a disc-less future…because it’s almost here.

Nintendo Drops the Price of Nintendo 3DS

Nintendo’s latest game machine may be cutting-edge videogame technology, but it hasn’t received the attention that Nintendo had hoped. As a result, Nintendo has announced that it’s dropping the price of the Nintendo 3DS.

Starting August 12, Nintendo’s 3D handheld machine will drop by $80…from $249.99 to $169.99.

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata shows of the Nintendo 3DS…which now features a lower price.

Nintendo has sold more than 4 million 3DS systems worldwide, but only about 830,000 units in the U.S. since its release. This shouldn’t come as a surprise, though, considering that previous 3D-less versions of the machine (such as the DS, DS Lite, DS XL and DSi) already saturate the market. Sure, the tech is cool – the 3DS doesn’t require 3D glasses to play games or watch movies in 3D – but the machine has failed to impress gamers and other electronics consumers.

Nintendo’s 3DS Ambassador Program: Free Games for Early Adopters
If you already bought a 3DS and are a bit upset at news of the price drop – less than a year after its release – you’ll be happy to know Nintendo will be making up for the price drop with a gift.

“Early adopters represent some of Nintendo’s most loyal customers, and Nintendo is rewarding them for getting in on the action early with 20 free downloadable games from the Nintendo eShop,” Nintendo said in a statement. But wait just a second before you go running to download your free games…

Nintendo’s eShop allows gamers to download games on the go.

To get your free games you have to use a wireless Internet connection to connect to the Nintendo eShop at least once before 11:59 PM Eastern time on Aug. 11 to get your free games. Gamers who buy the 3DS prior to August 12 will get half of their free games in September and the rest before the end of the year.

More of the Same: In 3D!
Does the Nintendo 3DS have great games? Yes, but the handheld device is also dogged by re-make syndrome. Games like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time have gotten the 3D treatment, but is this really what gamers want? The 3DS uses Sharp’s parallax barrier LCD to display 3D without glasses. But just like the movies, making the next generation of video games will be about the content, and not the gimmick, and that’s what will get consumers motivated to buy your product.

How about you? Are you ready to buy a Nintendo 3DS now?

AstroClip Turns Your iPhone 4 into Space Camera

For many people, amateur astronomy (i.e., star-gazing) is an exciting and enjoyable hobby – one that lets you connect with the vastness of space while learning more about planets, stars and other cosmic phenomenon. Now there’s a new gadget that lets you attach your iPhone 4 to any telescope and take pictures of the deep reaches of space.

A photo of the Moon taken with AstroClip.

Called AstroClip, the molded plastic clip connects easily to your iPhone 4 and allows you to attach it to any telescope that uses a 1.25-inch eyepiece. Once you attach the clip by snapping it on your iPhone 4 – and then adjusting three small screws to secure the accessory to your telescope – you can then take pictures of the sky, or any distant object for that matter, using your iPhone.

Shoot the Moon…and More
The concept of the AstroClip is not new; astronomers have been attaching cameras to telescopes for years. However, such camera mounts have typically only worked with specific models or with heavier cameras that often made it necessary to start using a bulkier telescope tripod to keep the telescope from falling over.

Three small screws (shown here) secure the accessory to your telescope.

The AstroClip, because it works in conjunction with the featherweight iPhone 4, doesn’t put an excessive weight strain on your telescope’s tripod. Nor will AstroClip put a strain your wallet, as it costs just $25 (which includes shipping anywhere on our planet). Previous camera mounts carried significantly larger pricetags. AstroClip is a great deal for a novice astronomer.

The small, compact AstroClip makes it easy to bring along on an evening astronomy adventure.

Follow Your Star
Unlike many hobbies that are scientific in nature, amateur astronomers actually play a key role in making genuine discoveries. Just recently, an amateur astronomer in Austria discovered a nebula created as a star began dying. Matthias Kronberger’s “soccer ball” nebula discovery was validated by Hawaii’s Gemini Observatory.

It may look a little like a blue soccer ball, but it’s really a nebula – the last gasps of a dying star. This amazing gaseous form was discovered by an amateur astronomer in Austria, and later confirmed by scientists, who named the discovery “Kronberger 61” after the stargazer who found it. (Credit: Gemini Observatory/AURA)

Want to have a star named after you? Maybe you want to discover your own planet? Today’s technology puts scientific wonders within everyone’s reach. For aspiring astrophysicists, you just need to start your adventures in science and you too could unlock the keys to the universe.

Five Best Videogames of Comic-Con 2011

As the movie, videogame and comic book industries invaded the San Diego Convention Center last week, Comic-Con 2011 dominated media coverage. Fans mobbed the Convention Center, too, looking for the  latest in cutting-edge entertainment. This year’s show is now history and for our gamers out there, we’ve rounded up for you the best five videogames of the show:

MASS EFFECT 3 (BioWare/Electronic Arts)
Platforms: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3
Release Date: March 6, 2012

BioWare’s Mass Effect 3 is easily one of the most anticipated games of 2012.

The long-awaited sequel to the make-your-own adventure, Mass Effect 3 was playable for gamers at Comic-Con. We saw this game at E3 but Comic-Con gave us a chance to spend more time with it. What did we like best about it? BioWare enhanced the third-person shooter aspect and RPG elements of the game and gave gamers the option to play as a female Shepard.

For the uninitiated, Mass Effect mixes sci-fi themes with elements of action RPG gaming. As the new game begins, Commander Shepard is being put on trial for what happened in ME 2. However during the trial, Earth is besieged by Reapers. Shepard uses the opportunity to make a quick exit and goes off to summon help from other alien civilizations. While Shepard is recruiting help, he encounters resistance from former allies, the Cerberus, and the space opera plays out from there. For players that worked hard on those previous game saves, you’ll be happy to know your progress will pick up where you left off with ME 3.

Expect multiple versions of ME 3 to be available — such as a collector’s edition and a digital deluxe edition. And get this: The special editions are set to include exclusive weapons found in the N7 Arsenal Pack. We’re totally buying that.

SPIDER-MAN: EDGE OF TIME (Beenox/Activision)
Platforms: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, Nintendo Wii, DS & 3DS
Release Date: October 4, 2011

“Excuse me, do you have the time?”  Spider-Man: Edge of Time floats between two time zones — the year 2099 and 2011.

Spider-Man is everywhere these days — including a new movie and even a Broadway musical. Not to be left out, he makes his latest videogame appearance in Spider-Man: Edge of Time. In a videogame that can be best described as Spider-Man meets Inception, there are actually two Spider-Men – one from the present (whose alter ego is Peter Parker) and one from the future (alias Miguel O’Hara) who rose to fame in the comic series Spider-Man 2099. Gamers play in either time period, but the game’s “Quantum Causality” feature, causes the actions you make in one era to have an effect in the other (like the cause-and-effect logic in Inception). If that isn’t enough to make your head spin, toss in the villainous antics of The Black Cat and Anti-Venom – and it’s really “game on.”

The present and the future link up in Edge of Time, with the 2099 version of Spider-Man working overtime to protect the original web-slinger from harm…and save the future from being devoured by an ultra-greedy corporation called Alchemax.

STREET FIGHTER x TEKKEN (Capcom/Capcom)
Platforms: PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation Vita
Release Date: March 2, 2012

Two of the greatest fighting games franchises in videogame history come together for the ultimate smack-down in Street Fighter x Tekken.

In a grudge match that could only be described as videogame nirvana, Namco and Capcom are pitting their toughest fighters against each other for the first time in the HD era. Fighters from the Tekken and Street Fighter series  face off together for what gamers are hoping will be the fighting game to end all fighting games. Street Fighter x Tekken (which Capcom translates as “Street Fighter cross Tekken”) pulls in all your favorite characters from Street Fighter (Ryu, Guile, Abel, Chun-Li, Poison, Dhalsim and more) and throws them in Tekken greats (such as Kazuya Mishima, King, Steve Fox and Yoshimitsu). And although this isn’t exactly the first time these two powerhouse rival companies have united to do battle (that honor goes to 2005’s Namco vs. Capcom), it’s the first time that gamers outside of Japan will be able to enjoy the mayhem.

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: SKYWARD SWORD (Nintendo EAD/Nintendo)
Platforms: Nintendo Wii
Release Date: Fall 2011

Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is actually a prequel to Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

In the latest installment of Nintendo’s legendary Legend of Zelda action/adventure series, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, the game FINALLY gets the high-definition treatment and a pick-me-up from the addition of Wii Motion Control Plus technology – which gives Link’s movements (such as shooting an arrow) new precision and power. Swordplay, in particular, is also given special attention, with this game paying attention to details such as how Link’s sword is angled before it cuts something (or somebody).

Nintendo gave additional depth to the environments between dungeons, too. And while the locations may be familiar, Nintendo has slipped in new gameplay surprises. Plus, as we mentioned, this will be the first time Link will be in HD glory.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: SUPER SOLDIER (Next Level Games/Sega)
Platforms: PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo DS
Release Date: July 19, 2011

Cap’s come a long way — originally debuting in Timely Comics (which evolved into Marvel Comics); Captain America is now starring in his own hit movie.

Captain America is an original superhero; he first appeared in comic books in 1941. But don’t count him out because of his age; his recent live-action feature (Captain America: The First Avenger) had enough muscle to knock the latest “Harry Potter” flick out of the top slot at the Box Office.

Captain America: Super Soldier is almost a companion piece to the movie, and follows the film’s general plot and action. As the Star-Spangled Avenger, Captain America sets out to explore a huge castle that’s been turned into a rogue military installation. Aside from using his own spectacular acrobatics and trusty fists to make his way through this third-person action game, Cap is equipped with his trusty shield, which he can hurl at enemies, protect himself from gunfire, and even scale walls when the need arises. It’s an action game through and through but captures the feeling of the film pretty well.

iPad 2 Facebook App Revealed

It’s been rumored for a while that Facebook has been quietly working on a Facebook app for the iPad – and we can now confirm that the rumors are true! The new Facebook iPad app was revealed today by a hacker who was using a jail-broken iPad to run the app. The hacker was able to modify a file hidden within the Facebook for iPhone app to unlock the iPad Easter egg. (This according to our friends at Mashable.com.) The result? A fully functional Facebook for the iPad!

Check out all the screenshots for the Facebook iPad app over on Mashable.com.

Facebook for iPad: We Like!
Sure, iPad owners can still download Facebook for the iPhone and run it on the iPad, but the app doesn’t display in high definition. The newly discovered iPad app is legit, though. (We confirmed as much with a development source close to the project – who had seen the iPad app.)

The iPad app uses many of the same features that third-party Facebook apps use, but instead has full access to the Facebook API, making the interface much better. The iPad’s drop-down menus and built-in keyboard make it much easier to navigate and update your status on the go. The iPad interface is very close to Facebook’s online look, and while Facebook Chat is supported, video chat doesn’t look like it will be available for launch.

When does the Facebook iPad app release? As of press time there’s no official release date, although development insiders say it looks like it won’t be long, since the app is near feature-complete.

App Development for iDevices is exploding, and the Facebook app represents just one example of that trend. Why not get started creating apps for the iPhone or making games for the Android?

First Look: The Amazing Spider-Man Appears at Comic-Con 2011

The movie Spider-Man 4 was set to release sometime in 2011. However, creative differences between director Sam Raimi and Sony Pictures caused Raimi and his stars – Tobey Maguire, James Franco and Kirsten Dunst – to say goodbye to the record-breaking franchise after 2007’s Spider-Man 3. Spider-Man 4 almost happened, and with John Malkovich confirmed to play the role of the villainous Vulture.

The star of The Amazing Spider-Man, Andrew Garfield appears in costume to meet fans at Comic-Con and promote the film. He later tossed the red and blue outfit into the crowd.

Raimi’s departure allowed Marvel and Sony Pictures to reboot the franchise, and honestly, it probably was for the best. With Spider-Man 3, the franchise had become bloated and cartoonish. Hardcore fans that once supported Raimi had turned against him, primarily for his treatment of the key villain Venom, who was relegated to a supporting role.

The New Spider-Man
“Spider-Man will always be an important franchise for Sony Pictures and a fresh start like this is a responsibility that we all take very seriously,” Michael Lynton is the Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures, and Lynton seems to be a man of his word.

Andrew Garfield is Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man.

In the footage Sony showed at Comic-Con, Garfield’s Peter Parker is seen using his mechanical webshooters (just like the original comic book) and getting used to his newly acquired superpowers. A first-person sequence (which copies the videogame Mirror’s Edge) puts moviegoers in Spider-Man’s shoes as he jumps from rooftop to rooftop. The sequence is truly “amazing.” Add to that the fact the movie will be in 3D!

The film also stars Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben, Sally Field as Aunt May, Emma Stone as love-interest Gwen Stacy and Rhys Ifans as D. Kurt Connors/The Lizard. Sony unveiled the new Spider-Man at Comic-Con 2011 in San Diego and the trailer not only wowed attendees, it re-instilled faith in hardcore fans:

The Amazing Spider-Man will release July 3, 2012, and stars The Social Network’s Andrew Garfield. Garfield was originally discounted by fans. Those sentiments have started to change though, as Garfield’s underwhelming physical appearance harkens back to Spider-Man’s roots and it looks as if the new film will more closely follow the early comic books drawn by legend Steve Ditko.

With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility
Comic fans still have some doubt about casting Garfield as the hero, but what fans don’t take into account is that Garfield is a BAFTA (the British equivalent of the Oscars) award winner – and he looks just like Mark Bagley’s Peter Parker. Garfield was born in the United States but grew up in England, and has been named by many industry publications as a rising star.

Creating comic book characters isn’t easy. Neither is digital filmmaking, but Marc Webb, the director of The Amazing Spider-Man is (who also a huge fan of the comic-book character, in particular, The Spectacular Spider-Man) seems to have firmly stood up to the challenge. What do you think? Are you looking forward to the reboot of Spider-Man?

Steven Spielberg Accepts Inkpot & Brings Tintin to Hall H

He’s a master filmmaker who needs no introduction, but we’ll give him one anyway: He invented the summer blockbuster with a movie about shark (Jaws). He’s brought dinosaurs back to life (Jurassic Park) and aliens to earth (E.T.Close Encounters of the Third Kind). He made an action hero out of Han Solo (Raiders of the Lost Ark) and turned Tom Cruise into a one-man wrecking crew – twice (War of the Worlds and Minority Report). He’s also been the producer and driving force behind more Hollywood blockbusters that we can list here, including, Saving Private Ryan, The Goonies, Schindler’s List, GremlinsTransformers, True Grit and more recently, Super 8 and Cowboys and Aliens. There’s almost nothing Steven Spielburg hasn’t done – except attend Comic-Con.

Oscar-winner Steven Spielberg.

That will all change this year when Spielberg makes a first-ever appearance in the famed Hall H, July 22 at Comic-Con 2011. But Spielberg is in San Diego for a number of reasons; receiving the Inkpot Award is just one of them.

Hollywood Legends Surprise San Diego
The Inkpot (which has been around since 1974) is awarded to cutting-edge creators in the comics and entertainment genre, past recipients include comic book legends Jack Kirby and R.Crumb as well as noted science-fiction author Ray Bradbury. But as the old saying goes, it’s better to give than receive, so Spielberg will be showing off footage from his latest film, The Adventures of Tintin to attendees in Hall H, where he will also receive the Inkpot.

Peter Jackson (far right), who co-presents Spielberg’s latest film, helps capture the action for The Adventures of TinTin.

Tintin, the French-based comic book was turned into a computer-generated/motion-capture movie for Paramount Pictures, and the film will be released to theaters in December 2011. The movie is Spielberg’s first since 2008′s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Filmmaking in the Digital Age
To bring Tintin to life, Spielberg used state-of-the-art technology, and working on the film was (as Spielberg puts it) “like (being) a painter, in a way.” It’s interesting to see Spielberg making movies with Maya. Now he’s not only directing the characters but handcrafting them – much like James Cameron did on Avatar.

Tintin will release nationwide December 23, 2011.

Next up for the filmmaker is the World War I-era drama War Horse, the much-anticipated historic biopic Lincoln (starring Daniel Day-Lewis as the 16th president) and finally the action-thriller, Robopocalypse, which is based on the frightening novel by Daniel H. Wilson. Until then we are certainly looking forward to The Adventures of Tintin.

For a full list of Steven Spielberg’s film credits, check out the Internet Movie Database.

Celebrating the Moon Landing

On July 20, 1969, Commander Neil Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, Jr. landed their spacecraft in the Sea of Tranquility…and on July 21, they cracked open the hatch and became the first humans to walk on the Moon.

Buzz Aldrin on the surface of the Moon, look closely and you can see the reflected image of Mission Commander Neil Armstrong within the astronaut’s helmet visor.

Getting There
It was no small feat getting three men to the moon; in fact, it took years. It was U.S. President John F. Kennedy, who addressed Congress in 1961 and boldly issued the challenged, “I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth.” And before the decade was out, Apollo 11 and three astronauts accomplished the goal.

By today’s standard’s their spacecraft and technology were ancient. The cramped crew quarters of Apollo 11 barely left room for the equipment, much less three rocket scientists. Need more perspective? The computer in your iPhone is more powerful than the computer that helped send these three astronauts to the moon.

“That’s one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind”

“The Eagle Has Landed.”
The astronauts’ landing craft, Eagle, sat on the lunar surface for 21 hours and 31 minutes. Meanwhile, the Module Pilot of Columbia, Michael Collins, orbited above the moon while Armstrong and Aldrin took a celestial stroll. And when they returned to Earth on July 24, 1969, they brought with them the hopes of the world and 47.5 pounds (21.5 kg) of moon rocks and lunar dust – and while you may think rocks wouldn’t make the greatest souvenir, the lunar artifacts are actually some of the most valued rubble on Planet Earth.

Astronaut “Buzz” Aldrin shows his lighter side.

Becoming a Rocket Scientist
Today the footprint and U.S. flag the astronauts left behind still stand untouched on the moon’s surface. A beacon, if you will, to future generations to carry on the tradition of exploration. You can follow in their footsteps with an updated version of Space Camp and amazing adventures in science and engineering. It takes determination and a passion for learning but if a trip to the moon is any indication, the reward is certainly worth it.

The last 40 years of space exploration were ruled by NASA. Private industry and companies like Google and Virgin look to rule the next 40 years. Nonetheless, mankind shouldn’t stop reaching for the stars. If anything, we should strive to explore our universe, all the while thanking the three guys who made the first steps beyond our planet. Do you want to be an astronaut?
