When Does The iPad 3 Come Out?

Even though the cheapest iPad is $499, the iPad is still one of the most popular device on the market today and sets the standard for tablet computers. And while new devices like the Kindle Fire have sparked consumer interest, folks are still flocking to the iPad.

The iPad tops the list of the hottest gifts this season.

The iPad easily tops the list as the must-have holiday gift of 2011 and based on industry analyst research, Apple will sell 13.5 million iPads in December alone. That’s more than an 84% increase over the same time last year and bring $8.26 billion in revenue to Apple.

iPad 3 Release Date
The iPad runs toe-to-toe with the iPhone as the most sought after Apple product. According to Gene Munster senior research analyst at Piper Jaffray, “the iPad is appealing to more price-sensitive buyers, while the Mac has retained a premium appeal.”

Recent reports indicate a new iPad (what’s being called iPad 3) may hit the market as soon as February, but don’t hold your breath. The original iPad was released April 2010, and the iPad 2 was just released this past March 2011. Analyst say Apple would want to give the iPad 2 at least a year on the market.

iPad 3 Features
These are rumored features, keep in mind, Apple hasn’t announced anything officially:

  • A high-resolution retina display like the the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. Basically, the iPad 3 will double the screen resolution at 2048 x 1536
  • Thinner, sleeker, losing 20 percent of the device’s current mass
  • A better 5MP camera (maybe even a flash)
  • Improved battery life
  • Wireless charging technology
  • A new A6 processor

Must-Have iPad
You shouldn’t let this put you off from buying an iPad 2 though. The iPad 2 is an incredible device, it features a front and rear facing camera and app development for the iPad is a booming business. More apps are available in the App Store than on Google’s Android, and they’re optimized for the iPad’s HD display.

iPhone Invitation Confirms Oct 4. iPhone 5 Launch

Apple has officially announced the launch date for its next iPhone (or iPhones). The big day? Next Tuesday, October 4th. The Cupertino, California-based company will reveal the eagerly anticipated iPhone 5 from the Town Hall auditorium on Apple’s campus.

Apple sent this simple invitation to the press to announce the event.

The invitation Apple sent to the media doesn’t reveal much else beside the date and location of the event. A Google maps icon pinpoints Apple’s campus location at 1 Infinite Loop in Cupertino. The date and time are also communicated. What is intriguing is the the red notification “1,” which on the iPhone indicates a message or call. Many industry insiders have speculated that Apple will introduce not only one iPhone but two new iPhones – including a smaller, cheaper and faster iPhone 4.

iPhones for Everyone
It’s also been rumored that Sprint will also carry the iPhone. That partnership, if a reality, will most likely be announced at the event, too. The various iPhone options (including a new iPhone 5) has been the source of many industry rumors. Most believe Apple is offering different types and price points for the iPhone in order to be more competitive with Google’s Android phones. If you’re considering a new cell phone, we recommend waiting until after the release of the iPhone 5, as the release of the iPhone 5 and different types of iPhones will most likely dramatically affect the plans offered by smartphone providers like AT&T & Verizon.

iPhone 5 Apps & Features
In addition to the new iOS 5, a number of other features and updates are expected along with the iPhone 5 announcement. Among them, Facebook and Twitter may be more closely intergrated into the phone. According to Ben Parr of Mashable, an unnamed source informed him that a new Facebook iPhone app, a new Facebook iPad app and, possibly (if that isn’t enough to have you updating your status by now), an HTML5-based mobile app store.

Neither Apple or Facebook have made any comment confirming the above rumor. Instead, Apple just quietly sent an invite for the October 4th event to press and select app developers. DMAC has been tracking the status of the iPhone 5‘s release for some time. Join us next Tuesday for a full report on the iPhone’s launch, including price and availability.

App of the Month: “Frisbee Forever” (Review)

Game: Frisbee Forever
Developer: Kiloo Games
Rating: 4 out 5 stars
Cost: Free

Summer is here and if you can’t get to your local park to toss the Frisbee around, you can still enjoy the sport from the comfort of your couch, thanks to Wham-O’s new game and app: “Frisbee Forever.” Developed by Kiloo Games, the colorful, arcade-style game plays a lot like a Wii game. The object is simple: Navigate a mini-golf-like obstacle course with a Frisbee for coins. Coins can then be used in a Frisbee shop to buy better flying discs or special upgrades.

“Frisbee Forever” runs on the iPhone and iPad and uses those iDevices’ accelerometer to control the Frisbee (players tilt the device left or right to guide the flying disc through the course).

A gameplay trailer of “Frisbee Forever.”

Frisbee Flicking Fun
It’s as easy as flicking your finger across the touchscreen to send the disc on its way. Gameplay is super-responsive and the graphics rival anything you’ve seen on the Wii. “Frisbee Forever” includes 10 different worlds, and each world (or area) features 10 levels…for a total of 100 challenges. The courses and environments are inventive and fun, and while, at times, some of the obstacles seem impossible, patience and a well-practiced tilting technique will get you through. Flying through hoops and triangle checkpoints on the course maintain the Frisbee’s momentum, and as you fly through each course, you’ll collect stars along the course. The medal you are eventually awarded is based on how many stars you collect.

Purchase “Frisbee Forever” through the Apple App Store.

As mentioned, as players advance through the game, they earn coins for clearing each level and receive a trophy rank of silver, bronze or gold. Be warned that patience is necessary, however, because even for the best player it will take a while to collect enough coins for the better discs. But you can also buy coins to purchase items through the App Store.

Overall, “Forever Frisbee” is an extremely well-made app and will provide you with hours of fun – all for free.
